~ A New Look ~

I've wanted the table above for a long time, I've always had the vision in my head of what I wanted, but even with my resources and much time looking I just never found the perfect one, so as they say: "when you can't find what your looking for , make it yourself ".... well, lol, I don't know who said that, but its a good motto. Hand painting furniture to some seems difficult , but I can assure you, if I can do it, so can anyone! Its a busy season, but I really wanted this done by Christmas so I took most of Saturday, set aside a few hours and went to work on it. The following below is a step by step guide to how I got to the finished look. (Above and below are 2 pictures of it finished and then the pictures go in order from "before" to the last step....)
Before ( below ) an old antique pine table and my 4 chairs...My new choice of colors were inspired by Elyse's beautiful little table over at Cottage, I knew they would be perfect for my kitchen, Thanks Elyse!
First step: Zinsser primer , one coat....
2: One solid coat of Linen White
3: Add any details you'd like, for me, I taped out and painted 4 stripes in a Robins Egg blue, then I also decoupaged some of the roses from my kitchen wallpaper and then hand painted cherries on to the chairs and table base...and then after the details were added, I sanded some paint off in areas of use to give it a nice distressed shabby look...

4: the next step is to glaze it with a glazing medium ( available at any paint store )......to get that, add a tint of antique color to the glaze, in my case I used a 1/4 cup of coffee color to 1 cup glaze and mixed it together. Then apply it it circular motions ( with a soft cloth )over the piece you are painting and this gives it the nice antique look.
5: And last but not least, apply a Coat of Bees Wax ( follow directions on the can ) to protect the finish, another name for the Bees Wax is "bowling alley wax"or Butchers wax.................................wa-lah! , you are done :)
Now its time to sit back and enjoy it..... :)
Any of the pictures can be clicked on to make bigger and get a better view of the layers....
I hope you are all having a fabulous Holiday Season! Now I'm off to visit all your wonderful blogs and catch up! Thank you so much for all your sweet comments on my gift wrapping ideas and Christmas decor, I am truly blessed by all of you!

~ Hugs ~

Ok, you have done it. Put me to shame. I have a dining room set that I have had since 1986...if you can believe that....it is French Country....paid a pretty penny...and still love it. Even though all I did was hand paint furniture (shabby chic it all) to sell at the flea markets and antique malls.....I have never done MY own table. I have wanted it white for about 10 years now, (it is pine)...but now I am into a sage/grey very soft and muted in my color choice. I am going to DO IT! Again, you are an inspiration ! Your table is so cute! Love the robins egg blue strips! When I do my table, I will email you and let you know...so you can take the credit of pushing me into it! (LOL) 1986, can you believe it? UGH! ~Cheryl

It looks fabulous Cynthia. I actually love painting furniture, it is such a great way to give a piece a new look for very little money. I am actually thinking about painting my dining room hutch a barn red this week. Thanks for the tip on the glazing. I have never done that. Your hard work paid off.

Hugs,
LeAnn:)

OH My Gosh! Cynthia that turned out so fabulous! I love it. Ok, now I need the real info... what brand of paint you used that is linen white. And was linen white the actual name? AND what brand of wax did you use?

I love the stripes, the roses, the cherries. Just perfect! And YES! The picnic basket would look wonderful sitting on that table! You could store vintage table linens in it. It is still available. I made another one for the person who ordered it and she purchased the second one I made for her. She just didn't want the side flip top - which i just LOVE.

Penny

Hi Cynthia
The table and chairs look fabulous. You did an awesome job. I had a pair of chairs just like yours which I got for $5 years ago and I helped my daughter paint them black for her dining room.
In answer to your queston about my red and white teapot; I got it at HomeGoods last year. There was no manufacturers' name on it
